Socks and sandals, the marmite duo of personal style? In my experience it seems this is a fashion combination that divides opinion. Personally I’m in the ‘Yes’ camp and when I opened my latest copy of Vogue and saw the fashionista and style icon that is Lara Stone sporting the look styled in a variety of different ways I was super pleased to see my own style in such very good company!

I do of course have to applaud the photoshoot stylist Lucinda Chambers, who has not only given me page after page of socks and sandals inspiration but demonstrated that clashing up your metallics and layering textures can build a show stopping look. As a photography student, fashion shoots are also a huge inspiration for when I’m behind the camera myself, so to see the photographs of this feature are the work of the legendary Mario Testino only makes me in awe of the images of Lara even more!

Magazines are also a huge influence on my own wardrobe. It’s true many of the items may be way beyond my budget in a beautiful glossy magazine like Vogue, but observing the fashion and seeing how trends are emerging and evolving is what inspires me to re-work a look in my own way and (most of the time) within my own budget.

So how do I combine socks and sandals? Well in all sorts of ways, but since seeing Lara’s metallic socks I just had to add some to my ever growing collection. The pair Lara wears are very reasonable at £6 from American Apparel, but I managed to find some similar in Topshop at three pairs for £8. That touch of sparkle definitely adds an extra to the socks and sandals look and makes them perfect for evenings out.

My top tips for pulling off socks and sandals

  1. A slight heel will add a grown-up fashionista vibe to the look.
  2. If you’re not convinced about wearing socks with a skirt, try the look with trousers – you can even match the colour socks to the sandals for a more discreet appearance.
  3. If you’re good to go bold with colours the world is your oyster! A pop of colour via a bright sock choice is a great way to rock the look and can be a very inexpensive tactic to stand out from the crowd.
  4. Not everyone is going to ‘get it’ and that’s okay – it’s your style and you’re doing it you way and for me that’s what fashion is all about!
