Autumn has arrived and, along with it, wind and rain as always. With stormy weather brewing in the Atlantic and the mercury beginning to fall, taking the kids outside for something to do becomes less attractive to both you and them. Nonetheless, autumn offers unique options for fun things to do, so here’s our rundown of the best now the sun isn’t shining so much anymore.

Leaf lanterns and conker craft

Hand-in-hand with autumn comes some interesting natural events. Most of the leaves on our trees drastically change colour, while children everywhere become obsessed with conkers, which are essentially wooden rocks.

This is an opportunity not to be missed as it’s a great chance for your kids to show off their creative side. The children’s art website, Red Ted Art, has some excellent ideas for activities to keep everyone occupied. For a start, they’ve got a bumper list of 15 things to do with conkers (better start collecting now) including making pencil toppers and conker snakes.

Our personal favourite from the site are the leaf lanterns though. Easy to make, uses up some bits and bobs you were just going to throw away, and they look great around the house too. The kids always love it to see something they’ve made decorating the house as well, so they’re really worth a go.

Making an autumn peg board

The best thing about Autumn is a perfect, clear, crisp day where the temperature’s just right for long stroll, crunching through the fallen leaves. It’s a great time to collect some mementos, whether that be an errant pine cone or some family snaps. Enter The Ordinary Lovely’s simplistic but beautiful autumn peg board. It’s an ideal way to spend an evening with the kids after being out and about for the day.

Tissue paper printing

Here’s something from Kids Craft Room – a super easy way to create beautiful crafts from scratch. It’s the perfect way to get the children showing off some artistic flair.

Owl bunting

While owls do hang about throughout the year, in the autumn they poke their feathered heads out much more often. You’ll certainly hear them a lot more as they start to stake out their territory in time for winter. To celebrate, why not make some of your own owl-themed items? We’ve heard… IT’S A HOOT... Sorry.

The Nurture Store have a great tutorial on making your own owl bunting which will keep the kiddies occupied for hours.

Apples, apples, apples

You can’t talk about autumn activities without including food, of course. While Americans go mad over pumpkin-everything, mulled cider is a much more British Autumn addition. That’s because it’s the perfect time of year for apples and, with 21 October being Apple Day, it’s time to get scrumping. Thinly Spread have put together a great apple-themed blog post giving you all the details on some apple crafts and how to make an apple pie with the kids.

Bubbles, drinks, and science

It’s never too early to conduct some scientific experiments with the kids, especially when they’ll have fun doing them. This superb task put together by Science Sparks not only helps children learn about the experimental method, it’s a nice opportunity to make a little bit of mess and learn something new too. If that sounds like something for your family, check out all the info here.
